Overview
Madhouse is my largest and perhaps most well known project to date. A work in progress for over 3 years, the game is still about 30% incomplete despite boasting 7 unique Arcade Mode stages, a fast-paced Versus Mode, and a bonus Survival Mode with online highscore integration. Madhouse is a top-down shooter presented in a pixel-based style I refer to as “retrostylized”, as players are reminded of the classic games of the NES and SNES era. Originally conceptualized as a versus-style deathmatch game, players compete against one another as one of many diverse characters including an undead butcher, a gas-masked mercenary, an insane clown, and a mysterious creature shrouded in rags.
More information on Madhouse can be found on the game's official website.
Features
2 – 8 player-controlled characters interacting in a 2D top-down environment (online version)
Gameplay is very similar to an FPS style game, but presented in an overhead 2D format
Worlds are highly interactive; featuring breakable objects, hiding places, and stage-unique gimmicks including traps, vehicles, and more
Play as a variety of 16 different characters based off of popular monster and psycho archetypes, each balanced with their own unique attributes and special abilities
“Super Deformed” comic-horror theme that provides a nostalgic atmosphere with 2D pixel-based sprites
A medley of up to 20 different weapons at the player's disposal; chainsaws, shotguns, bombs, and a flamethrower to name a few
5 modes of play including Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Hitman, and Last Man Standing (online version)
Progress and Status
Development on the PC freeware title has been on hold since November 2007, when the game was met with the prospect of being developed as a Nintendo DS game by a local start-up studio. The project was refocused for development on the DS and a full-length design document was written. However, the DS version of Madhouse never came to fruition and shortly after this failure I lost motivation for the project entirely.
Recently, I decided to revisit this project for a complete redesign as an online PC game. The design document for this incarnation of the game is nearly finished and programmer Luke Arntson is standing by to offer his assistance with the project, but as of right now it is undecided when actual production will begin.
